Just In Case You’re Wondering

We’ve been putting the labor into the Labor Day weekend, cleaning out the garage and attic, and culling out stuff that we don’t want to take back to California. It’s typical south Florida weather (hurricane-prep weather) — hot and humid. I start dripping if I’m just standing outside the protection of the air conditioning, without even doing any work. I’ve drunk about ten glasses of water today, and it all goes out through my sweat glands, and never has time to get to my bladder.

  1. Make sure to top up those electrolytes too. A bottle of sports drink from the corner store will do it if you don’t mind all the sugar – but one way or another, get some sodium and potassium salts into you along with all the water. You’re sweating them out too, and severe lack of them can screw you up pretty badly.

  2. The SoCal hot ‘n humid weather seems to be pretty much gone as of yesterday; the last couple of weeks were pretty bad for those of us who can’t justify spending money on A/C (because there’s only about 2-3 weeks out of the year when we need it), but now we’re back to being spoiled.

I say this as somebody who was working construction outdoors during the summer of 1980, which was the hottest summer in the Kansas / Oklahoma / Texas area since the Dust Bowl. I made sure to drink 8 oz of water every 30 minutes to stay hydrated, and never had a problem – other than it being so bloody hot. Coastal SoCal has to be just about the best climate in the entire US (despite what the San Francisco partisans may say)…
