The Decline and Fall of the American Empire is a lot like the End of the World, at least so far: constantly predicted — but it still has yet to actually happen.
I furthermore suspect that the people most eager to forecast either will be even more surprised than the rest of us if/when either actually does happen.
On related news, Christina Romer is forecasting that health reform will reduce the deficit. Where she veers from economist to pink unicorn salesperson is in saying that expanding health insurance coverage to self-insured people will somehow reduce health care spending and government spending.
The decline of the US is in the best of hands.
