  1. It made my wife cry….

And it harkens back to the military origins (in people, and culture, anyway) of NASA, long since gone: The reward for doing a difficult job well is doing it more, or a worse job…

Kudos to the geeks at JPL for building a fine little ‘bot. Of course, NASA no doubt wasn’t happy, since lasting so much longer than planned, on budget and schedule (more or less), defeats their primary goals for job security

  2. OK, it made me cry too. And I’m with Scott on this one.

We’re going to have to get a set of ethics in place so that this doesn’t happen for real. While out space-qualified hardware now is only marginally more intelligent than a spiny rock lobster, the work on neural simulation looks pretty promising.

As for Spirit – a monument in a dome in place, or back home to the Smithsonian? Might take a few centuries though, either way.

The Smithsonian is not “home” for Spirit. It was designed and built for Mars. Make it a home there.

  4. The easy answer would be to leave one there, and bring the other one back.

Like Zoe said though, it’s going to be a while before we can even think about it.
