I’ve Heard Of Walking A Mile For A Camel

…but this is ridiculous:

63-year-old Lions fan walks 425 miles to attend practice.

Now that’s a fan. Twenty-five miles a day is a pretty good pace for someone that age. If he keeps it up, he might live to a ripe old age.

[Update a while later]

Speaking of Michigan football, what is the world coming to? First the Big Televen becomes the new Big Twelve with the addition of Nebraska (that’ll rev up a new rivalry with the Wolverines, who haven’t forgotten having to unfairly share the title in ’97), but will also screw up the traditional game with tOSU as the last game of the season. Apparently, they’re going to put the Wolverines and the Buckeyes in separate divisions (which makes no sense geographically) so they can hope for matchups in a title game, but don’t want to risk having them play each other two weeks in a row. Bo and Woody are both rolling in their graves, I suspect.

  1. I knew he was a Yupe as soon as I saw that distance number. I grew up in the Upper Peninsula and that’s within 10 miles or so of the distance from my own hometown to Detroit by the most direct road route. I don’t think it’s actually possible to walk, or drive, that far to Detroit from any starting point in the Lower Peninsula unless you deliberately go in circles or something.

  2. Yeah, probably near Marquette.

But you were assuming that he was a Michiganian. He could have come from Kentucky, or Pennsylvania. Some auto workers retire back where they came from, but are (masochistic) Lions fans.

Face facts, Rand, the rivalry isn’t what it used to be. Ohio State’s (and to a lesser extent, Penn State’s) Big 10 dominance over the last 10 years is one of the major reasons for enticing Nebraska into the conference. Michigan once could be counted on to give the Big 10 schedule some credibility in the polls but those days are long gone (Appalachian State, for God’s sake!). Sic transit gloria mundi.

  4. Oh, the lengths a Lions fan will go to watch them play and not lose. Practice is about as good as it gets. They serve a lot of Kool-Aid at Ford Field in the off-season.

  5. Thanks, Jim, rub it in.

At least Michigan still has an Aero department the football team can be proud of. At Ohio State enrollment has dropped to the point that it had to be folded back into the ME department. 🙁

  6. A few years back, I read a biography of Alexander the Great. Some his veteran troops were on active duty into their early sixties. But then again, walking from the what’s now the coast of Turkey to the border of India, while fighting most of the way, will do that to you.

  7. Yeah, probably near Marquette.

Pretty close. A little burg near Munising, apparently. I’m an ex-Escanaban myself.

I didn’t know that about the retirees in Appalachia. I will say that the only element of doubt about his Yupe-ness that crossed my mind before actually following the link and doing some Bing-ing was the business of being a Lions fan at all. When I was a lad, Lions fans were virtually unknown in the U.P. Everybody was a Packer fan, Green Bay being less than half as far from even the eastern U.P. than is Detroit. But that was during the Lombardi glory days, of course. I haven’t kept up with such matters since leaving back in the day. I suppose Lion-ism may have established a foothold in the decades since. Hell, Detroit’s full of mosques these days, so I’m told, so weirder things than Lions fans in the U.P. have definitely happened back in my hard-luck home state.
