“Moderate” Muslims

This is encouraging. Not:

Even so-called moderate Muslim scholars praised 26-year-old Mumtaz Qadri for allegedly killing Punjab province Gov. Salman Taseer on Tuesday in a hail of gunfire while he was supposed to be protecting him as a bodyguard. Qadri later told authorities he acted because of Taseer’s vocal opposition to blasphemy laws that order death for those who insult Islam.

As Qadri was escorted into court in Islamabad, a rowdy crowd patted his back and kissed his cheek as lawyers at the scene threw flowers. On the way out, some 200 sympathizers chanted slogans in his favor, and the suspect stood at the back door of an armored police van and repeatedly yelled “God is great.”

Many other Pakistanis were appalled.

“Extremist thought has become so mainstream that what we need to question in Pakistan is what people think constitutes extremism now,” said Fasi Zaka, a 34-year-old radio host and columnist.

Well, I’m glad that many other Pakistanis were appalled, but how would they be categorized? I wonder what “moderate” Imam Rauf thinks?

  1. “Conflict with Islam can be resolved without violence.”

Perhaps, but how would they learn anything?

Wow, and that website is NOT like a white power or nazi propaganda website how? exactly?

Broad brushes and sweeping generalizations and hardcore spin…

Read on, and weep for the lameness of the effort.

“Wow, and that website is NOT like a white power or nazi propaganda website how? exactly?”

You may be right about the sweeping generalizations and broad brush critiques, but I think there are some critical differences between this and white power/nazi websites:

    1) There is no racial aspect that I could find on this website, but maybe I did not read enough of it.

    2) The criticism is directed at an ideology, and not a racial type.

    3) It does not suggest any physical attack on Muslims, whether initiated by state, group, or individual.

    4) It suggests protecting and caring for apostates Muslims.

    5) The only weapon it suggests using is ridicule.

    6) It suggests attacking only the ideology, not the people themselves.

I see what you mean about how the stereotyping may be similar to the sites you mention, but the stategy here seems very different. Nazis and white power types are typically racial purists, and many openly advocate violence and ultimately race war. I don’t see where the website is suggesting violence.

  4. Makes me glad I personally consigned all aspects of religion to the scrap heap years ago. Religion is a mind virus and a particularly pernicious one at that.

Make me glad you did too. You must have been a real joy to be around at those “particularly pernicious” youth ministry ice cream socials and BBQs.

I’m reminded of Trotsky’s quote: “You may not be interested in war, but war is interested in you.”

  7. It’s not realistic to rule out a violent response when dealing with people who believe it is god’s will to convert, subjugate, or destroy you by whatever means necessary.

The trouble with referring to Muslims as “moderate” is that “moderate is and always will be a relative term.

The “good cop” in any scenario is always more “moderate” than the bad cop — but both are trying to get you to confess yourself right into a long prison sentence. At best.

With Islam, the “moderate” good cop is offering dhimmi half-citizenship in a worldwide Islamic regime as opposed to the bad cop’s offer of gruesome death.

  9. Radical muslims want everyone to submit to Islam and are willing to kill any who don’t right now.

Moderate muslims want everybody to submit to Islam and are willing to wait until they are in the majority to kill any who don’t pay the Jizya and accept an eternal position as second class citizens.

  10. There does seem a disconnect between people that want liberty and government that wants to appease. It’s ‘give me liberty’ or death; not dhimmitude or death.
