  1. Simon is confused. The Modern Left is a textbook 6th century religion. Replace God with Gaia or social good, Holy Communion with recycling, sin with carbon footprint, holy with multicultural, and it all translates quite directly. The submergence of the self in the Higher Cause, the Inquisition against heretics and backsliders in Toledo or Daily Kos, as appropriate, the heated visions of Apocalypse and the seas rising to swallow all, with Al “Noah” Gore crying before the gates of Sodom for a carbon-tax ark to be built — it’s all there, you just need to download the right skin from the human social psychology app store.

The Modern Left isn’t blind to this danger, they simply recognize a natural ally in the jihad against individual liberty, one with whom they can ultimately divide influence, even if they remain formal enemies, like Spain and Portugal having the Pope divide up the savage world.

  2. The Modern Left is a textbook 6th century religion.

    Obviously.

But they don’t know that. They actually think they are “beyond” religion. They’re higher beings, natch.

Which is why Simon is actually right, and your second paragraph is wrong. The Left is truly blind to the nature of religion, because blinding themselves (pretending it’s all just throwback irrationality) is the first step in hiding the true nature of Leftism. Thus they are blinded to Islam’s true nature as well.

Lefties may think they can “divide the world” like Spain and Portugal between enlightened, post-God European culture and Islam, and it is in Islam’s interest to let them believe that, but they are not natural allies in a fight against liberty. The Left thinks they are, but Islam knows that if Christianity is defeated then Lefties are next.

  3. I’ve been saying for a long time that I think that leftists and Muslims are using each other as useful idiots. Each wants to destroy Western capitalism, and each thinks they can deal with the other afterwards.

I’d give the edge to the Muslims since they’ve been at it a lot longer, but leftists can be quite ruthless when they want to be. See Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot.

Then you’ve also got the really hard-core environmentalists who believe that the human population must be reduced to <1 billion. I'm pretty sure they aren't Muslims.

  4. I don’t quite agree, Brock. Keep in mind the Modern Left is very flexible in its use of language, e.g. a “legislator” is a Democrat. If someone of Republican tendencies gets elected, at the least he has to be identified as a “Republican legislator,” sort of like “artificial flavoring” versus “flavoring.”

So when they say they are behind “religion” you have to ask what they really mean by that world. And what they mean is not that they have gone beyond dogma or zealotry, but that these things are no longer in service to the cult of Jesus Christ. With Leftists, it’s always about the ends, not the means. If you pointed out their means are identical to the Islamists, they would stare at you blankly. And…so? Your point is…? Since their goals are different, they would say, that makes all the difference in the world.

Islam knows that if Christianity is defeated then Lefties are next.

Of course. And Stalin fully intended to betray Hitler, except that Hitler beat him to it. So the alliance is temporary. That doesn’t mean it isn’t attractive.

Who wins that fight depends entirely on how patient the Muslims are. If they press the fight in Generation 1, the Lefties could pull a Hitler. If the Muslims wait just one generation however their population will double and the Lefty Welfare State will implode and leave all the chilldless lefties to die with no one to care for them.

  6. Iran is dominated by Shia Moslems. The revolutionary ideas promoted by the film are primarily a threat to Iran’s non-shia neighbors.

  7. Who says the left doesn’t understand religious fanaticism?

They know the Muslim Brotherhood is a bowling league and that the Tea Party is just the Nazis without the cool matching shirts and arm bands.

What else is there to know?
