To The Consternation Of The Suits In Hollywood

Atlas Shrugged seems to be doing pretty well:

business has been brisk enough for producers Harmon Kaslow and John Aglialoro to expand from 299 theaters to 425 this weekend and to 1,000 by the end of the month. They don’t have enough film prints to fill all the orders.

“Things have turned for us,” Kaslow said. “When we started, exhibitors were not embracing the film like we thought they would. Now, we can pretty much go into as many theaters as we want. It’s just a matter of logistics.”

Unexpectedly!

Though he’s still cautious, this would bode well for Parts 2 and 3.

  1. This caught my eye: “Merchandise, he said, is helping the cause.” So I went to the website, and sure enough, there is a lot of cool AS promotional stuff. The “Rearden Metal” bracelets are back-ordered (sadly, these knock-offs are made of aluminum, not Rearden metal). But there are lots of t-shirts etc. I emailed them and told them I was holding out for a “Rearden Steel” coffee mug. 😉

  2. I think I read that “book 2” had already been shot. The problems they are having expanding into more theaters this time, was the lack of enthusiasm of many venue’s to pre-book the showings, thus the small number, and didn’t think that they would be able to expand the viewings this fast, so they are little first come first serving the new venues as the prints are being churned out.

Come when bookII comes out, they will be better prepared, not to mention it will be a significant election year, which will itself, likely increase interest. I like the optimism of maintaining a long run. A lot of movies, the blockbusters have to make their money in 3 weeks, or a month, then peter out. Whereas AS book 1 is looking to expand their presence in theaters.
