  1. I dunno…..

If we ever attach disgrace to earmarks, it would be nice to see who the pigs are at the trough.

  2. The airport in San Jose is the Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport for no reason that I can see. I think this was purely a suck-up job.

Maybe we need something like the PBUH that the Muslims use, but kind of backwards. Every time the name of a building or overpass or whatever with a politician’s name on it is used in the media, the reference must be accompanied by some sort of swearing. The Noman Y. Minetta May His Teeth Fall Out and May Hemorrhoids Form on His Hemorrhoids International Airport. No penalty for disfiguring any sign featuring the name.

It was his district. He probably steered some funds.

      1. He was Sec of Transportation at the time it was named after him. He couldn’t have steered earmarks their way, but maybe he could get the airport qualified for certain programs.

        1. I believe that all airport security checkpoints should be named after George W. Bush and Norm Mineta.

  3. I believe every appropriation should be an earmark. Someone should take responsibility for every appropriation that is introduced. Omnibus spending bills which are voted up or down in their entirety, after all the horse trading is done, are a significant causal factor for the growth of federal government spending.

    1. Spending that’s requested by the Administration is not considered to be an earmark by definition.

Most earmarks are wasteful, but I see no evidence that the average earmark is better or worse than the average spending requested by (unelected) bureaucrats. It does have the advantage that those responsible can (in theory) be voted out of office. Unfortunately, that does not happen often enough.

  4. If we’re dreaming about how it -should- be, the budget should be a one-sheet allocation of actual funds-on-hand from the previous year between the senate-confirmed cabinet level positions. New projects are separate bills.
