Harley Thronson and Dan Lester describe the history of the Future In-Space Operations working group. I hadn’t realized that it wasn’t a formal NASA activity. Which makes it all the more remarkable, because it’s one of the most valuable things that’s been happening for the past several years.
To its great discredit the Augustine Committee ignored the work of Steidle, OASIS, DPT etc. It is sad that people like Thronson have had to bite their tongues when Gerstenmaier and Shannon came up with bowdlerised versions of OASIS with an SLS shoehorned into it. I hope that one day there will be a reckoning and a great purge of the many top managers at NASA who are responsible for the current almost criminally ineffective NASA policy. It seems unlikely to happen under this administration though.
