The Danger Of Anti-Libertarianism

As exemplified by Chris Christie.

One of the nastiest strawmen continually being flung is that libertarians are anarchists. No, the Occumorons are anarchists, and nihilists (or at least they look to them for their political tactics, even though they want the government around to give them stuff). Limited government, as the Founders laid it out, is not anarchy. In fact, you could almost say that a lawless government of men, like the current one, is more anarchical than one based on the Constitution and law.

  1. Leftist straw man: Libertarians are anarchists.

SoCon straw man: Libertarians are libertines.

Nobody likes competition. It’s good to see that mainstream political groups increasingly see libertarianism as a threat.

  2. Anarchism isn’t the same as chaos. Anarcho-capitalism shouldn’t be unpalatable to libertarians. You could say it is simply taking a good idea to its natural conclusion.

Also, I don’t think the Occupy people are truly anarchists either, they probably want to control your carbon consumption, take away any guns you may have and steal your money. They do seem intent on causing chaos, which again is not the same as anarchism.

  3. Anarcho-capitalism isn’t anarchy either. Anarchy is the aversion to -archy, most notably monarchy, but also just about any social structure. This obviously does not fit the bill for anarcho-capitalism as the market defines many social structures, some that are even royal like – the customer is King, after all.

As anyone who has studied American history knows, or even better French history, libertarians are not all that married to the idea of a free market. The natural order of the market is seen as preferable to rule by men or laws only when it is preferable, to be decided by men or laws.
