Rewriting History

No, WaPo, Richard Nixon was not impeached:

Obama ends his fifth year in office with lower approval ratings than almost all other recent two-term presidents. At this point in 2005, for example, former president George W. Bush was at 47 percent positive, 52 percent negative. All other post-World War II presidents were at or above 50 percent at this point in their second terms, except Richard M. Nixon, whose fifth year ended in 1973 with an approval rating of 29 percent because of the Watergate scandal that later brought impeachment and his resignation.

The resignation was to avoid impeachment (and removal) — he resigned because a group of senators from his own party went to the White House and told him that he’d be convicted if impeached. Because Republicans have the integrity to remove their bad apples, while Democrats circle the wagons around theirs.

Anyway, I’ll bet the reporter who wrote that wasn’t even born at the time.

  1. The House Judiciary Committee approved articles of impeachment, so the process was underway, but you’re right, Nixon technically wasn’t impeached. The Post should have written “impeachment proceedings” rather than “impeachment”. FWIW, Dan Balz has been a Post reporter since 1978, so he’s definitely old enough to remember.

Neither party is interested in investigating its own. Republicans circled the wagons around Nixon until the evidence of criminal activity was undeniable, and then they threw him overboard (with a pardon) rather than absorb additional months of political damage.

    1. I am old enough to remember. I really don’t remember any wagons in a circle. I remember a certain Howard Baker asking pointed questions during hearings. Mr. Nixon was really “out there” on his own and had little visibile political support from anyone.

  2. Got to muddy the waters, least people connect the Democrats “Good Government” lies to the fact that only Democrat Presidents get impeached…….

  3. To give the devil his due, the Dems of that time period probably would’ve given up a hypothetical bad apple, it wasn’t until the 90’s and Slick Willie when they started “circling the wagons”. The Democrats of today? There’s nothing but bad apples left.

    1. Nonsense. The Democrats did nothing about Wilson, or Palmer, and the whole point of destroying McCarthy was to “circle the wagons”. The Democrats have been the party of the Corrupt in America since Jackson got elected.
