  1. Depends on the state. Start a business in California or New York and expect huge paperwork filings. In Texas, you can get up and running in a few days.

  2. I know a guy who has been trying to get a new business up and running in Southern California for years now. He’s spent over $100,000, and has still gotten nowhere. Here’s the kicker: the particular city he is working with WANTS the business to get up and running. They’re even offering him a $1 lease on the land to encourage it… but even with the strong support of the city, they still can’t/won’t waive a whole pile of ridiculous regulations, fees, and requirements. This particular man has actually worked in one of the central Asian republics named in this story (I want to keep vague to protect his identity) and actually opened a number of factories there… and he said to the people from the city that it was easier to do it over there than over here. So this story and comparison isn’t just for shock value. This guy can state from experience that it’s actually true.

  3. dn-guy: “People who want to start a business should move to Rwanda, genocide suits their ideology.”

  4. The report found that New Zealand is the easiest place in the world to create a new business. Starting one there requires “one procedure, half a day, (and) less than 1 percent of income per capita and no paid-in minimum capital,” the study noted.

As an addition to a discussion in an earlier thread: Suck eggs Bart!

  5. The government needs to paperwork, so they can take credit when they claim “you didn’t build that”.
