1. Your type-face color appears to be the same that the article was railing about. But, I would point out that his analogy to black ink on white paper is flawed. White paper is not the same as a white background on a monitor, which is much brighter. Because of that, it is easier on the eyes to view a dark-gray type-face on a white screen. Black text on a white background is almost as bad as white on a black background. These are OK for titles, but high-contrast is not the best for copy text.

   As far as the “hipster web designer, who probably wears plaid pajamas and drinks hot chocolate while talking to his mommy and daddy about healthcare” goes, well that would be whoever created the WordPress template you are using. Given how lame WoprdPress templates tend to be, I share the sentiment about the programmer.

   1. Oh, it doesn’t have to be #000, although Glenn’s page certainly is easier to read than some others. Readability, as I noted, is somewhere in the range of 80-90 percent. Just, 40 percent with a 10pt font is ridiculous.

      1. Font size is another annoyance. As monitors get bigger, pixel density increases too, and everyone these days seems to want to code their web pages in 10pt fonts, which is ridiculous if you’re not 20 any more.

2. Not quite that bad, Rand — your text is #444444, which is significantly darker.

   OTOH, it could be better. (IE, darker.) Contrast is good even if we don’t have serious cataract problems. I’m just myopic, and my bifocals aren’t ever quite up to snuff. More contrast is always better,

   Even the kids with good eyes can read the better contrasted stuff. So nobody will be missing anything if you go darker, right?

5. CERN made a major change today, citing the effect of font selection on the discovery of the Higgs boson.
