The Y is better in this one. The M still needs help. A black over-mark along the left edge, across the top to the middle and the right would emphasize the ‘m’-ness. The L could stand for something.
Part of the reason I think that the original fist worked better as the ‘m’ is that the MSNBC logo is too generic to be recognizable outside of its own full context. It’s pretty much just a subtly-tweaked version of Helvetica, really.
