Unfriending Over Politics

Democrats are much more likely than Republicans (and conservatives) to do it.

I’m completely unsurprised. For the Left, the personal is political; they have a great deal of difficulty separating the two. If you have a different opinion from them, you’re not merely wrong, but evil. In addition, they are much more pained by intrusions into the epistemic closure of their ideological cocoon, and simply can’t tolerate them.

This is why I have two Twitter accounts (not counting the book): one for my general opinions (to which I believe that everyone is entitled, just as at this blog) and one just for space stuff. I see a lot of political craziness in my space TL that I simply ignore, because I follow those issuing it for space stuff, and don’t want to get into arguments with friends over non-space stuff. When a space person follows my non-space account, I always DM them a warning that if they’re following for space stuff, they’re better off with @Simberg_Space.

These people are many things, but “liberal” is not one of them.

  1. This is perhaps the first year that I really talked politics with people in person. I did a little back in college, but mostly because it was somewhat expected. But the most basic political belief I have is that government and politics should have little impact on my daily life. For that reason, when meeting people in person, I tend not to bring such into others lives (I leave the politics on the Internet).

But there’s always an exception, as it was with a coworker. Actually, he brought the politics, and he was a hardcore Bernie supporter. Hardcore, in that at lunch one day, he lectured a mutual friend, who happened to be a Cuban refugee, about the wonders of free education and healthcare. Fortunately, our Cuban friend recognized an useful idiot, and knew no argument could be won against a true believer. So in real life; the Cuban and I decided to cut relations with the coworker. No fuss was made. We simply decided that until the election was over; perhaps lunch needed to be done elsewhere. Interestingly enough, I did see the socialist’s Facebook post about the horrors of the electoral college; so perhaps after the first 100 days are over. Still Facebook friends though!

  2. Democrats are showing the same grace in defeat that they showed during the election and were bound to show if Hillary had won.

It is good advice to have two twitter accounts. Far too many professionals tweet politics and other contentious issues on their business accounts and then get butthurt when people disagree.
