A Classic SLAPP

Popehat shows how this works. As he says, Colorado doesn’t have an anti-SLAPP law, but it may just get dismissed.

By the way, while I don’t generally discuss my own case, briefly, because he’s a public figure, if it ever actually gets to trial, he has to show that I acted “with malice.” Legally, what this means is that I had a “reckless disregard for the truth,” which means that I either knew what I was writing wasn’t true, or I didn’t care whether or not it was.

Whatever else you might think of him, you know who recklessly disregards the truth every day? Donald J. Trump. Though Barack Obama did it a lot, too, to cram ObamaCare down our throats (among many other things).

  1. Isaac Asimov had something to say on this topic (every topic probably!) He was speaking of science but the truth could be generalized. Basically right and wrong are errors; more or less right is a more accurate standard.

Anybody that isn’t both precise and accurate could be called a liar but that wouldn’t be right. It also doesn’t account for hyperbole which is a tool use effectively by some to cut through verbal clutter.

Jesus used hyperbole extensively. Camels don’t fit through the eye of needles so by saying that’s easier you could call him a liar… but that would be a serious mistake.

Tell me any Trump lie that isn’t based on some recognizable truth. People constantly say something is the best when it’s merely good… is that really the same kind of lie as intentional lies used to deceive on matters of importance?

By absolute standards everyone is a liar, but only some are truly evil.

  2. Camels don’t fit through the eye of needles

He wasn’t talking about an actual needle. “The eye of the needle” was a narrow passageway in Jerusalem.

And sorry, Trump has a reckless disregard for the truth. If someone wanted to sue him for defamation, they could take him to the cleaners. Except, of course, he’d settle.

    1. Eye of a needle isn’t the only example. Rafter in your eye is another well known example. There are many more.

Trump is worth billions. If he were the defamer you say he is that would be a cottage industry.

Note some restaurant is suing Trump in DC. Why? Because anybody can sue anybody and idiot left is in a feeding frenzy. Watch them lose.

      1. I have no idea how much Trump is worth, and neither do you. Probably one of the reasons he refuses to release his returns is that it would give us some clues.

        1. His actual net worth is a red herring. Whatever his worth is, it is enough that you allege ‘they could take him to the cleaners.’

          You should get a percentage?

          1. His actual net worth is a red herring.

A “red herring” that you brought up, not me.

Ken, do you ever listen to yourself in your uncritical adulation of your ignorant hero?

          2. I’m not uncritical. I think Trump is making a huge mistake in the way he is handling ObamaCare. The red herring is his ACTUAL net worth. My point that he has money, and therefore a juicy target if winning a defamation suit were as easy as you suggest, is certainly pertinent.

Make no mistake. I am very aware of his deficiencies as our president. But the failure of our other elected representatives is much greater. The left is an existential threat (and not the only one) to our country.

We need to support the people around Trump that can move him in the right direction. But also acknowledge that behind the scenes he’s getting things done that have been long overdue.
