  1. We’ve been thinking about getting one, just to play with.

I just got one of these to do exactly that. It uses DJI guidance like the more expensive item, but it is easier to replace or handle as a sunk cost if I don’t enjoy it. It’s also on the PM list.

    1. Just took my drone for a test flight indoors.

I got a set with a game type remote that cradles the phone. I think you could fly just fine with the phone alone. The platform is very stable and simple to fly. If you want to spend more money, then I think the DJI software will keep you in control even when you scale up.

There’s is plenty more to try. I didn’t play with VR flight yet. I haven’t tried any acrobatic maneuvers. Those things would be better outside over the soft grass.

    2. Rand, I realized a bit later; you don’t do smart phones. The smart device connects to the drone via direct WiFi link and to a controller via Bluetooth (or it can act like a controller on its own). You need a smart device, as it is also the monitor for the onboard camera. However, you should be able to use an iPod or some sort of Android device. A cellular device is not necessary.

  2. I don’t think I want one. They just go on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on….

  3. I got a “used” 3DR Solo cheap off Amazon – as new. It is the first generation smart / GPS and looks like the DJI products. The hand controls use a smartphone or small tablet for the live video feed, and it’s really easy to use.

As it turns out, I don’t really use it much at all. They have limited utility for just flying around and looking at things as there are a lot of restrictions. I used to fly R/C planes and helicopters, the drone is dead simple to fly (even boring). Last time I used it was inspecting the gutters for leaves.
