  1. Premature in the sense that there is no way to mine an asteroid much less know which one to mine. It is a question of how to get there from here. Mining asteroids is inherently a long term investment and the business model of the company should also have been long term.

    Musk wants to go to Mars. His business model is one that funds itself, regardless of whether or not he ever gets to Mars.

    Aside from a lack of creativity to profit as the industry is now, a major problem they would have had is staying true to their purpose over the decades. But if they had a business model, they still might be in business even if they never mined an asteroid.

    It looks like they were searching for a business model but this should have been done much sooner.
