The Shrinking Museum Looting Affair
As time goes on, it’s looking more and more like claims of the loss of Iraq’s cultural heritage in looting were as overblown as the Jenin “massacre” over a year ago.
…While many museum officials watched in horror as mobs and perhaps organized gangs rampaged through the museum’s 18 galleries, seized objects on display, tore open steel cases, smashed statues and broke into storage vaults, officials now discount the first reports that the museum’s entire collection of 170,000 objects had been lost…
…Col. Matthew F. Bogdanos, a Marine reservist who is investigating the looting and is stationed at the museum, said museum officials had given him a list of 29 artifacts that were definitely missing. But since then, 4 items ? ivory objects from the eighth century B.C. ? had been traced.
“Twenty-five pieces is not the same as 170,000,” said Colonel Bogdanos, who in civilian life is an assistant Manhattan district attorney…
This Week’s Fox Column
Is up. It’s a reprise of the New York Times surrender piece, with some commercial space commentary at the end.

More Homophobia
See where hate speech like Santorum’s leads? A mob boss was whacked because he was gay.
Former DeCavalcante soldier Anthony Capo said the New Jersey-based family – often described as the real-life “Sopranos” – feared they would be the laughing stock of the New York underworld if their acting boss, John “Johnny Boy” D’Amato was outted.
“Nobody’s gonna respect us if we have a gay homosexual boss sitting down discussing La Cosa Nostra business,” Capo told jurors in Manhattan federal court.
Will this be the next battleground for gay rights?
Capo, the mobster-turned-government informant, said he felt like killing D’Amato when the boss’s girlfriend, known as Kelly, confessed to him about his secret life.
“She told me John D’Amato and her were going to sex clubs in the city, swapping partners and John was engaging in homosexual activity,” he said.
“It shocked me…he couldn’t be acting that way–he was a leader of men.”
Actually it sounds more like he was AC-DC to me…
No Anti-Americans Here
Amir Taheri writes that, in contrast to the press coverage of anti-American protests in Iraq, it’s isolated and that rather than being anti-American, the populace is mostly uncertain, and in need of leadership.
He Likes The US “To Some Extent”
Michael Moore did an interview in Japan. It comes off more as though it was from another planet. This stuff is, as Jonah pointed out the other day, not just figuratively childish, but literally childish.
Q: What do you think is the reason for the war?
The motivation for war is simple. The U.S. government started the war with Iraq in order to make it easy for U.S. corporations to do business in other countries. They intend to use cheap labor in those countries, which will make Americans rich. The U.S. government claims to bring democracy to Iraq; however, no country in the world takes such an assertion seriously. It is an illusion.
Q: What do you think of Bush?
He is simply a puppet. Behind him, neo-conservative aides such as Rumsfeld or Cheney are controlling him. They are imitating what the Reagan administration did under the campaign of building a “Strong America.”
Read the whole thing, if you can stomach it. It’s almost self fisking.
