Light Posting

I don’t have Internet where I’m staying, and while I’ll probably have wireless for the next three days at the conference, there will be way too much going on to have any time for live blogging. I’ll try to provide at least some daily highlights, though, and live coverage if there is any breaking news, as there was last year.

[Tuesday evening update]

I don’t know whether it’s my computer, or the wireless in the convention center, but this is the first time I’ve been on line all day, when I got back to where I’m staying, with ethernet. Probably little blogging from the conference…

Research Request

I just got an email. I don’t in fact have time to answer all these questions, but perhaps some of my readers do. I think that the nation needs more engineers. I also think that it’s sad that the nation doesn’t seem to value them as much as it should, and that they’re often treated particularly shabbily by the aerospace industry:

Hello,

My name is Harley Wilkinson. I’m a student at Camdenton High School in Camdenton MO. I’m in a Project Lead The Way class and am writing a paper about a field of engineering. I was wondering if you would have the time to answer a few questions for me about your job and the training/education you needed.

1) What is an average day’s work routine is like.
2) What is your particular job duties.
3) What were some of the more helpful college courses you took to prepare you.
4) Do you have any regrets of things you wished you would have done diffrently education wise.
5) As someone straight out of college what is the average starting salary.
6) What high school classes do you believe helped you the most.

If you would be able to take the time to answer these questions it would be greatly appreciated. If not I understand that your time is valuable.

Thank You,
Harley Wilkinson

The Dog That Didn’t Bark?

Where was the vaunted “Arab street”? Where were the protests from the other Arab nations to the UN about Israel’s “aggression” against Syria?

Some interesting military and diplomatic analysis and discussion over at Tigerhawk’s place.

[Monday evening update]

Here’s a lot more. Can we officially replace Iraq with Syria as the newest member of the Axis of Evil now? Though hopefully one that may be treading a little more carefully, now that it knows (once again) that its air defenses are worthless.

And speaking of the old A of E, Iran’s war against us doesn’t seem to be going very well. Unfortunately, this doesn’t get covered much, either in the media, or in Congressional hearings.

Wish I’d Had A Camera

Posting from LA. I got off the plane to a beautiful South Bay day yesterday–clear skies, low humidity, mid seventies. And you could see mountains. What a contrast with Florida.

Anyway, driving up the 405 today from Long Beach to Torrance, I was behind a tow truck that had a banner on the back: “AAA Batteries Delivered And Installed.” Unfortunately, the little Canon I carry was in my briefcase in the trunk.

Anyway, considering that I was in Fry’s yesterday, where I could buy twenty four of the little suckers for seven bucks, and most of the plastic covers are pretty easy to get off, I think that the lack of handiness of the American male has gone too far.

Uh Oh

Looks like we’ll dodge Ingrid, which is falling apart under shear. But this little aside from a much longer tropical blog post by Jeff Masters is a little worrying:

The GFS, ECMWF, and UKMET models all suggest a tropical depression may form in the Western Caribbean on Wednesday and move northwards into the Gulf of Mexico or over Florida.

I’m going to LA tomorrow, and not coming back until early next Saturday morning. I’d like to know a little more. How long will it take to move north, and how much (if any) will it intensify? Do the models have an opinion about that?

We could use a tropical depression here, and even a tropical storm, to help refill up the lake, which is still four feet less than normal (due to draining it last year as a precaution against a hurricane season that didn’t happen), as we head toward the dry season. But I can do without a major hurricane, particularly if I’m not here to shutter the house.
