FAA grew out of the old Civil Aeronautics Board, so it sort of does go further back than 1958. Sort of the same way that NACA led to NASA… I gather the impetus for the FAA was that the CAB was kind of toothless and didn’t deal well with the growth of air travel after WW2. (Gosh – I figured reading those Time-Life history of flight books in elementary school might be useful someday!)
