  1. That’s the point. They are.

What do you do if you’re both christian and Italian? Pay your taxes like it’s a game? Wait! Give Ceasar the things of Ceasar… Do we have a tax Czar yet?

  2. It’s not a lack of a sense of humor. It would be funny from a comedian. I explained why it’s not funny coming from a president, and particularly from this one.

If you have to explain why a joke is funny, it isn’t. Similarly, if you have to write a WSJ op-ed to explain why it isn’t funny, it is.

Obama got away with the joke because his audience isn’t afraid of him using the IRS for personal payback — that idea is so at odds with Obama’s image that it’s literally laughable.

I’m sure that is true. His audience does seem to have an image of Obama that is not based in reality.

    Yes.

Similarly, if you have to write a WSJ op-ed to explain why it isn’t funny, it is.

There is no logic to that statement at all. There is no symmetry to the first proposition.

  6. Jokes about abuse of power coming from someone who can (and does) abuse his power aren’t funny. Not in a society that wants to be free, anyway.

Would you have laughed if Bush had made the same joke?

  7. > Obama got away with the joke because his audience isn’t afraid of him using the IRS for personal payback

That just means that they don’t think that Obama will sic the IRS on them.

    > — that idea is so at odds with Obama’s image that it’s literally laughable.

Which image would that be? The “no military tribunals” image? Or the “military tribunals almost exactly like Bush’s”?

The only consistent thing in Obama’s behavior is Chicagl-style power-seeking, and retribution is an essential part of that.

At least Nixon went to China. Where’s Obama going?

If no one thought the joke was funny, Reynolds would not have had to write an op-ed to explain why they shouldn’t have.

Imagine if Cheney made a joking threat to listen in on the phone calls of Democratic congressmen. No one would have laughed. And no one would have written an op-ed explaining why the joke wasn’t funny — there’d have been no need.

Basically, Reynolds’ op-ed amounts to saying “the joke you thought was funny wasn’t funny to me, because I have a very different view of Obama than most people, and if you saw him the way I do you wouldn’t be laughing.” It’s the refrain of a humorless scold.

  9. Imagine if Cheney made a joking threat to listen in on the phone calls of Democratic congressmen. No one would have laughed.

That’s just because they have no sense of humor.

  10. Gee, Jim, what’s Obama going to do for a rolling-on-the-floor encore? Jokes about trashing the American economy? Jokes about voting in favor of murdering babies that survive abortion procedures? Jokes about buzzing NYC in a jumbo jet, jsut to see if anyone remembers 9-11?

    Oh, wait…

  11. President Obama “joking” about having someone audited is about as funny as Joseph Stalin “joking” about sending someone to the gulag.

  12. President Obama “joking” about having someone audited is about as funny as Joseph Stalin “joking” about sending someone to the gulag.

Well, Walter Duranty would have split a gut over it, I’m sure, just as Jim does with Obama.

  13. The notion that Glenn Reynolds hasn’t a sense of humor is moronic.

I agree, which is why I was surprised by his op-ed.

  14. “I thought liberals were supposed to be the humorless ones.”

Extremists of all kinds lack a sense of humor.
Feminazi’s and Puritans spend a lot of time pursing their lip at vagina jokes.

  15. I’m neither a Puritan nor a Feminazi, Jack, but I don’t see what’s funny about vaginas. Vaginas don’t do funny things, and they don’t say funny things. People do and say funny things, and about half of them have vaginas, and apparently a lot of them talk about vaginas, and apparently a lot of them think talking about vaginas is funny. I think what’s funny is that they thing talkink about vaginas is funny.

  16. I was there. (Yes i finally finishd the Masters)
It was funny. Most of his talk was pretty funny actually.

I mean, I certainly laughed when he talked about “fiscal responsibility”…
