Lileks Versus Mastercard

…and creeping, creepy ecofascism:

Isn’t it interesting how Dad looks like the sort of delayed-adolescent types most likely to be already concerned about these things, and spending his day working on developing websites for sustainability, hosted on servers powered by methane captured from pig excreta? For that matter, who would like this ad? Wives who regard their husbands as overgrown boys in need of the Moral Guidance of those who will inherit the earth, perhaps…

…One more thing: if the kid didn’t learn these steps to righteousness at home, where did he get them?

The state knows best.

  1. Conservatism used to be about conserving things, now it
    seems to be about consumption.

  2. Conservatism was about conserving ideas such as freedom and limited government, Jack.

But what would you know about ideas?

  3. “jack lee”, Conservatism is about conserving things in my household. Besides having CFLs in every light socket, we also conserve money by not buying a “reusable” plastic bag but by using the free paper and plastic grocery bags.

We save up the grocery paper bags because in couple months it is apple picking season, and we use those bags to pick our own apples and store them.

We use the flimsy plastic bags for everything. I call them “Serbian luggage” because I save them and use them for hauling stuff everywhere. I use them to pick and bag garlic mustard, an exotic invasive weed, which must be bagged and placed in landfill garbage because putting it in compost will spread its seed everywhere.

I use them for kitchen and bathroom garbage bags instead of, get this, using a reusable grocery bag and then buying plastic garbage bags for that purpose.

I drive a 12 year old car that gets 35 highway MPG instead of spending 25K on a hybrid car that in practice gets 45 highway MPG, and I carpool and pre-plan and consolidate trips.

Liberalism is about “recycling” the stash of grocery bags in the pantry so you can go out and spend money on those 2-dollar bags at the Whole Foods so you don’t have to be caught carrying stuff around in grocery bags like the immigrant generation in your family and your friends can think well of you that you have the Whole Foods corporate logo.

  4. Oh God, I hate that obnoxious commercial. I’ve seen a variant without the kid voice over and it’s even more obnoxious, because the Wee Wise One’s guilt-making looks are even more emphasized. If Shirley Temple were a child star today she’d be tapping out an eco-anthem to a crowd of adoring neo-hippies.

  5. 1956 Conservatism “Republican cloth coat”.

1980’s Conservatism ” Furs and designers”

2002 Conservatism ” Just go shopping”

I don’t know about others but We use canvas bags from conferenences i have been at.

The plastic grocery bags work great for compost and bathroom waste, but they are too small for kitchen trash.

    So it is about consumption….
