  1. …though to be fair, the fact VP Biden is officially the President of the Senate doesn’t help since it means his IQ still factors into the aforementioned average.

  2. Actually, comparing Franken to a horse’s ass is something of an insult to the ass. Perhaps we might more usefully compare him to the product of the ass?

  3. I’m from Louisiana (and yes we once had to choose between a crook (Edwin Edwards) and a KKK grand wizard (David Duke) for governor – the crook won), but seriously, what is up with Minnesota? First Jesse Ventura, and now Al Franken?

I’m worried over the absence of remarks from our beloved Mr. Lileks. Has his head imploded?

  4. What, aside from his being a Democrat, makes Franken a horse’s ass? Coleman is no prize; if he’d been reelected he would have gone straight into an ethics investigation.

  5. Not just Ventura and Franken, but they’ve also given us Walter “I’m from the government, and I’m here to help you” Mondale and Harold Stassen.

  6. What, aside from his being a Democrat, makes Franken a horse’s ass?

You never watched Saturday Night Live, or read any of his books, or read about asshattery like this? At least he’ll be the first Senator who admits he’s a comedian, even if he’s not very funny.

  7. Franken can’t control his temper. Wait ’til he punches somebody in the senate.

  8. Coleman is no prize; if he’d been reelected he would have gone straight into an ethics investigation.

Jim (the socialist) – if you really cared about ethics, you’d be demanding Senator Dodd be investigated for his connections with Angelo. You’re not. When I see you demand ethics investigations for people like Dodd and Rangel, I might just believe you really care about corruption. Until then, I think you are just a bad liar.

  9. Why are you people surprised Franken stole won the election? He cheated on his taxes for years, had to be pulled away from people before punching them on the campaign trail and threatened to sue people who didn’t talk nice about him. All before being seated. He fits right in with the current majority.

  10. I think that Dodd and Rangel should be investigated and thrown out of office if found to have broken ethics rules (or the law). I don’t know much about the Dodd situation, but from what I’ve read about Rangel he’s an embarrassment to the Democratic Party and the House.

I haven’t read his books, but I thought he was often funny on SNL, and of course the people in MN didn’t vote for him as an evaluation of his comedy. He’s a smart guy who seems to be pretty serious about public policy.

He cheated on his taxes for years

You go earn money in every state in the union and try to not make any mistakes on your taxes. This isn’t in the same league as Coleman getting his suits from donors.

  11. Credit where it’s due, folks: Coleman ran a lousy campaign.

Politics is like any other business: if you’ve been supplying me for many years and I suddenly drop you faster than a Democrat drops an ethics investigation and go shop from Inbred Eddie’s down the block… it’s probably got something to do with the quality of the services I’ve been getting from you.

  12. if found to have broken ethics rules

And there’s Jim’s weasel wording again. The Democrats aren’t going to investigate their own, the rest of them are just as corrupt and the public scandals give their party leaders a hold over them.

He’s a tool, plain and simple.

  13. I’ll give you credit Jim, but you keep it only when you keep up the pressure. I’d say another embarrassment would be Murtha.

  14. And there’s Jim’s weasel wording again. The Democrats aren’t going to investigate their own, the rest of them are just as corrupt and the public scandals give their party leaders a hold over them.

You are probably right about the Democrats not thoroughly investigating their own; both parties are terrible on this score. I wish we had a better system for impartially enforcing ethics rules.

I’d say another embarrassment would be Murtha.

I’d agree. And Dan Inouye (D-HI), who earmarked funds for a museum to commemorate the (very praiseworthy) exploits of his fellow Japanese-American veterans in WWII, a museum run by the woman who is now his wife.

  15. Enough of the moral equivalence crap, Jim. Corruption is a core value of Democratic politics in a way it simply isn’t on the Republican side. Most likely this is because big city machine politics has been a Democratic monopoly for decades – they simply have a better “farm team” system. Consider the differing fates of two otherwise comparable characters: Vietnam war hero Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham (R) took about $2 million in bribes and was found out while Republicans still had control of Congress. Result: kicked out of office, convicted, fined and jailed with considerable dispatch. World War II hero Sen. Daniel Inouye pulled strings to get $135 million in bailout funds for a bank in which he and his family are investors over the objections of the Federal Reserve while Democrats controlled Congress. Results: Nada.
