To Boldenly Go To China

A discussion over at Slashdot. As a commenter notes, it’s not very smart politics to go against the wishes of the incoming chairman of the appropriations subcommittee. I’d really like to know what the White House thinks. I think that it’s time for Charlie Bolden to go, though, as I’ve said, it will be tough to replace him, particularly in the current heated political environment.

  1. I’m curious if he is planning the trip on his own or by the suggestion of the President and SecState. Slashdot’s quote noting the authorization bill is as of yet meaningless, since it is still just a bill, and not a law.

It’s all speculation, but we’ll know something in just a few days. But it would be interesting to see the Administration not only defy the will of 3/4th of Congress, and then help bolster the economic development of China, as it is with Russia. And for those who think this is a NASA vs US new space; think it through. Money is going away from NASA and building up competition from governments elsewhere.

I’d be happy if the President proved me wrong in the next week.

  2. Did you know that today (101010) is the answer to the ultimate question?

    42!

Naw, it’s actually General Purpose Fertilizer Day. An international holiday for anyone who grows, stuff.

  3. Bolden has sent out a statement to NASA employees that says the President is supposed to sign the NASA authorization bill into law today. Interesting, since that activity is not on the President’s agenda today, but then again, I’m sure not all bills get signed with a photo op or pomp and circumstance. White House website still shows it as pending legislation at 12:30 CDT, with the President about to depart for a fund raiser in Miami.
