  1. smooth sailing on the home front for the weiner:

Anyway. The latest poll from his district has 56 percent of his constituents saying he shouldn’t resign; just 33 percent think he should. That doesn’t make him a lock for reelection, but it Pelosi and company thought a full-court press would tilt public opinion against him, they’d better reconsider.

  2. Really? He lied to the President, of his own party? If true, this guy is stunningly delusional. How he can expect to have any kind of further political career as a Democrat is beyond me. Even people within the party who despise Obama will not forget that Wiener punked the Chief. That’s an unforgiveable transgression of party discipline, no matter who the Chief is.

For that matter, I wouldn’t expect Republicans to lie to the President. Decline to answer questions, sure. But bullshit him…? No.

Apparently they’re morons. A Representative held in deep contempt by the party leadership gets no co-sponsors to his legislation, isn’t asked his opinion on anything, gets no useful assignments. He might as well not bother showing up, as if he’s in the minority his vote doesn’t count, and if he’s in the majority, unless it’s a majority of exactly 1, his vote doesn’t count either.

  3. “A Representative held in deep contempt by the party leadership gets no co-sponsors to his legislation, isn’t asked his opinion on anything, gets no useful assignments.”

don’t be so rational about weiner. i think it has more to do with status. this weiner has the best gig he’ll ever have. damn if he won’t keep it.

  4. Wasn’t there an unmarried Republican who was forced by the Republicans to resign because he sent a picture of himself shirtless (not pantsless) to someone from Craigslist who apparently was trying to get dates? (or something like that – I didn’t follow it.)

If I’m remembering that correctly, why has no one brought that up, early and often?

  5. this weiner has the best gig he’ll ever have.

Well that’s certainly true now. But had he made some different choices, even after he tweeted his magnum opus, that would not be true. This is apparently a guy who puts out his smoldering matches with gasoline, or maybe gasoline mixed with thermite. He’s like the Dr. Kevorkian of politics. Want your political career killed in no time flat? Call Anthony, 1-800-DED-DUCK.

  6. Maybe in public they call for him to go but in private tell him things will calm down in a few months and he can get back on MSNBC and Fox championing their causes.

  7. Actually, I thought the Repub who resigned over how shirtlessness was indeed married. Not that single guys in public life should troll for dates on the Internet half naked, but this is kinda like Bill Clinton at the height of his Troubles moaning about Bob Kerrey getting all kinds of “action” and no one batting an eye — the dude is single, Bill, and our society lets single guys date more than one woman whereas married guys don’t get to play the field. It is that marriage thing. I know your girlfriend will want you to make a committment and get married, but if you are not into that committment thing, you should not get married.

I thing Congressman Weiner’s problem wasn’t quite so much what he did, which is pretty dumb and pretty much a matter between him and his spouse (or the women in question if they were being stalked in some manner). The deal is that he used his same attack-mode “It is all a right-wing conspiracy” that he is famous for in promoting the Democratic Party Left-Liberal Brand in defending himself against allegations that were in fact true.

What is an analogy? Everyone (on the Liberal Left Blogosphere) snarks about Rush and his drug addiction. If Rush used his airtime to ridicule people who brought this situation to light, saying it was all a Liberal Left plot to discredit him, going into full Rush mode to deny the allegation and then, oops, it was true, that would really cut into Rush’s credibility to do his partisan political thing. As far as I can tell, Rush did no such thing — he may have kept quiet about it and then when it became public ‘fessed up and done the “we are all human and fail sometimes” bit. So his credibility as a partisan spokesman is pretty much intact.

No Hillary, on the other hand, invoked the “vast Right Wing conspiracy” in defense of Bill for you-know-what, but we kinda give a spouse some benefit-of-the-doubt in going into attack-dog mode to protect her husband. And besides, there was a kind of Right Wing conspiracy in terms of The American Spectator laying into Bill and having that thread picked up by the Editorial Page of the Wall Street Journal.

But here, who is in the Right Wing Conspiracy — Wolf Blitzer?

  8. I want him to stay in office. hes damaged goods, less effective of a congressman for the democrats, and any time he opens his yap , he can be shut down by asking him about hi wiener.

  9. Weiner has also complained to friends that he wasn’t sure how he would make a living if he were to leave Congress and its $174,000 annual salary. “He’s worried about money and how to pay his bills,” said a Democratic insider. “He’s very concerned about that.”

  10. I heard yesterday that Bill Clinton thinks he should resign!

In the meantime, this is heating up. It appears that one of the girls he messaged was underage. “Authorities” are looking into this one.

Best new headline (out of many): “Weiner Says He’ll Stick it Out.”

  11. You’re right! Bill Clinton has done worse than Weiner but Clinton did not resign as President. So why should Weiner resign when he is only a Senator? Of course, this shouldn’t be a justification of Weiner’s acts but it would not be fair to demand such when it has not been demanded from the one who came before him.

  12. People did demand Clinton resign. The House even impeached him. His job was saved only by the fact the Senate was populated by invertebrates — as it still is to this day.

  13. And Weiner is not a Senator. He’s a member of the House (heh, I said “member”).

Gawd, I wish the schools still taught civics.

  14. Also (last one, I promise) it still isn’t known just how bad it really is with Weiner. New bits and pieces of his misbehavior are still coming to light.

  15. Interesting that in 24 hours, Nancy Pelosi has gone from:

“It’s up to him and his constituents”

    to

    “He’s gotta go”

She has a moral compass, but apparently her magnetic north keeps switching poles.
