  1. In spite of CNN’s foolishness, did any of the candidates seem like the least worst to you?

And in particular, do you anticipate supporting Bachman if only the debate participants + Huntsman enter the race?

My wife listened to Bachman for the first time, and said “Not bad”. I said “Keep listening.” When Bachman proposed abolishing the EPA, my wife was astonished (and, I think, dropped any pro-female bias she was harboring.)

  2. Whoops, I forgot Newt. In mind, he’s dropped out already, but I imagine you’d like him the best, right?

  3. Titus, I care who Rand favors for the same reason I read his blog. I even care who other commenters favor, for the same reason I read their comments. I saw Fred Thompson with new eyes because of the support he received on this blog.

But, so what? A Jules Winnfield line seems appropriate — “Sewer rat may taste like pumpkin pie, but I’ll never know ‘cuz I’ll never eat the damn thing.”

So if it’s not concern trolling, then it’s just morbid curiosity, like gathering data on a species before you snuff it.

  5. As it happens, I just this hour stumbled upon a relevant quote: “The point of reading is to learn the value of other perspectives. If all you know about the other side is what your side says about them, then you’re not thinking.” — Gary Saul Morson.

I’d modify that slightly to say “One point of reading…”, but I certainly agree with the sentiment. Despite the rudeness found here (which I think is really regrettable), I’ve learned a lot reading this blog.

  6. How do you feel about learning about actual gorillas? Do you think it is a waste of time? I’m bewildered by your attitude toward learning.

Also consider Ron Paul, a guy who knows he isn’t going to be President but who wants his ideas to influence the national conversation. When he makes points about government overstepping its constitutional authority, patriotic Americans (Republicans and Democrats) should take note, as surely they want to uphold the Constitution. And when Ron Paul argues that the US should stop using drones in Yemen, Democrats and Republicans who believe we should kill terrorists in Yemen should also take note, so as to better understand how to frame their counter-argument and sell their ideas to the American public.

It seems to me that if we did things your way, non-libertarians wouldn’t listen to what Ron Paul had to say, and we’d be poorer for it.

    Are you serious?

Those who say the mandate is constitutional point to the Commerce Clause, which allows the federal government to do any damn thing it pleases.

  8. I’m bewildered by your attitude toward learning.

For all your “learning”, you’re still going to punch “D” on your ballot. If, on the gripping-hand, your’re higher-up on the food-chain, then no, I certainly do not discount the tactical value of intel — that would be absurd.

  9. Do you jump into the water and try to entertain the occupants with stories about how your wife now hates fish?

  10. The Bachman story was intended to raise a question: can a Republican presidential candidate in 2011 propose abolishing the EPA and still get elected? Bachman in particular will be helped by identity politics even as prejudice against women in leadership positions hurts her, but I think if you polled women, they’d be overwhelmingly in favor of the EPA’s existence.

  11. Anyway, my original question was whether Rand (or commenters like you, Titus) had a preference at this early date. Other readers of thread who share your politics would probably enjoy reading such opinions. This isn’t really about me – I was just asking a question that I hoped would be enjoyable for everyone.

    Which would be:

did any of the candidates seem like the least worst to you?

I dunno bob, which one was the worst least for you?
