My intent is not to be cynical, but isn’t retirement for most of the astronaut corps pretty much in order? How many do we really need to fill the few precious spots on Soyuz/ISS? After STS-135, that’ll be all there is.
Since the start of the shuttle there’s always been ten times as many astronauts than there is actual seats.. it’s good old government bloat.
In the case of Mark, I think you’re being PC. He’s not only an elitist asshole, he’s also a global warming alarmist. If his wife wasn’t recovering you’d be saying what you mean: good riddance.
I’m not being PC, I’m just being polite. And actually, he’s started coming around on commercial. Of course, it becoming the only realistic way to get into space will do that to an astronaut.
