  1. And history teaches us that fascism pops up when social democracy loses its compass.

Since multiculturalism is the destruction of that compass, and fascism is the inevitable result of multiculturalism, that would make the multiculturalists neo-fascists.

  2. The Europeans are between a rock and a hard place. The non-European ethnic immigrants are correct; there is a major blood-soil-race aspect to every European national identity. The Europeans are also correct; irredentist primitivist barbarism cannot coexist with liberal modernity.

Then there’s the demographic train rushing toward the collapsed bridge. If present trends continue, in 100 years there will be fewer white Europeans, including Russians, than there are just Germans today. Europe’s population will shrink by 7/8ths while that of the U.S. at least doubles. That train left the station long ago and is already barreling along at full speed. Exactly how far down the tracks the collapsed bridge awaits is slightly uncertain, but that it’s there is unquestionable.

How many European citizens of non-European ancestry there will be a century hence is less well defined, but I believe their numbers will also shrink, possibly even faster. Muslims in Europe have, for now, much higher birthrates than native white populations, but, as most of them are welfare clients and the welfare states are coming unstuck, this won’t last. Hard times in developed countries always wreak hell on birthrates – everyone’s birthrates. In such a case, I see another century of the same sullen defacto apartheid and ghettoization of the Europeans of non-European ancestry as both native and immigrant populations dwindle, in rough tandem, toward terminal insignificance.

Major advances in human life expectancy over the next century would slow the rate of decline, but nowhere near reverse it.

A possible wild card would be effective genetic therapies to modify one’s skin color. If overt “race” becomes a choice, not a legacy, things get very much more interesting indeed.

  3. Rand pretty poor you raising correlation to something worth linking to, Bet Al Gore has a correlation, he’ll sell ya too and his suggested correlation at least has some proven science behind it. And even the correlation is weak was their riots in England in 92?, were their substantial higher welfare in England in 1981 and 1985?

Maybe something worth looking into further with more rigor but don’t think it pass much of a sniff test.
Unfortunately for Dutch and much of Europe they got those multicultural immigrants doing the jobs at a rate that their own people turn a nose at. Too bad can’t read the article behind the NYT barrier. Bigger issue is much of Europe countries limited the upward mobility of the new immigrants, need to be able to pull themselves up.

  4. “A possible wild card would be effective genetic therapies to modify one’s skin color.”

A lot of “non-European Europeans” are still “Caucasians.” Turks and Arabs are not considered to be of a different “race,” and their skin color isn’t a problem. Also, skin color is just one aspect of race — if you bleach an African he still looks like an African. (For example, albinism is not uncommon in Africa. Albino Africans still have Negroid features.)

But the problem in Europe isn’t with race, it’s with culture. You can’t change culture with “genetic therapies.”

Unfortunately it’s worse than that. Only a few of them are gainfully employed – like my neighbours who are entrepreneurs, who work very hard and who are all round good guys. Most of the unskilled work is done by immigrants from Eastern Europe, who tend to speak at least a bit of German and who come from a culture that is not radically different from ours.

The majority of ethnic minorities from Turkey and Morocco are unemployed and on welfare.

As for those from Surinam: they tend to speak Dutch well as Dutch is one of the official languages of Surinam and the language of its government and education system. Many of them have a Dutch passport. Surinam was a colony of the Netherlands and when it gained indepence its inhabitants were offered the choice of keeping their old Dutch nationality or acquiring Surinamese nationality.

Ehtnic minorities from Aruba and the Antilles have Dutch nationality too, but they tend to speak Dutch less well than their Surinamese counterparts. There are exceptions of course, one of my best friends is from Aruba, he speaks perfect Dutch and he successfully runs a sole proprietorship.

True, Andrea, but some Africans are a lot more “African”-looking than others. Many Somalis and Sudanese, for example, lack stereotypical African noses and lips. There are other ethnic groups in Africa that also depart quite a bit from the “African” norm.

In the world outside Africa, skin color and facial configuration are less certain as ethnic markers. Here in Los Angeles there are huge numbers of people – especially attractive women(!) – whom I have come to categorize as NSEB’s (Non-Specifically Ethnic, Brown). You see one of these folks and you really have no idea whether they are Arabic, Persian, Latin, Armenian, Indian or what-have-you.

And it isn’t just that I’m a clueless white guy and can’t pick ethnicity on sight. Decades ago when I was an undergrad, I saw three Mexican girls in my residence hall cafeteria approach three male Libyans under the impression they were fellow Latins. The mixup was quickly discovered, but all six finished the meal at the same table and there was at least one Tripoli-Tijauna hookup out of that group that lasted all semester.

My point is that, even if one is not ancestrally or culturally a European, if you look enough like one, on casual inspection, there is the opportunity to mingle without the initial distancing and defensiveness occasioned by obviously being “the Other.” Medical control of skin pigmentation would offer this option and some fraction of immigrants would avail themselves of it. In Europe, that means some of the “swarthy Levantines” would choose to be whiter.

For what it’s worth, I suspect a lot of white Americans, and others, would probably choose to be permanently darker – and not just the cast of Jersey Shore. I certainly would. I’m of exclusively northern European ancestry and live in a nearly always sunny climate. There’s a modest history of skin cancer in my family and I would take whatever help I could get.

My wife is a Filipina nurse. Over the years, she has had many people approach her and start speaking their language to her. Not only fellow Asians including Chinese, Japanese and Koreans but Cherokees, Maori, and Inuits. When I see her standing beside these people, it’s easy to see how they were mistaken. They look very much alike.

She used to play a game with her patients when they asked where she’s from. She’d make them guess and almost none guessed the Philippines. When they gave up, she said she’s from Sweden. She loves messing with people.

  8. It’s a brown world. American whites and blacks both live in a bit of a bubble to the extent they imagine their ongoing racial psychodrama is anything but a minor sideshow with respect to the larger world.
