If Karl Rove had been channeling the ghost of Lee Atwater, he couldn’t have come up with a less unsympathic bunch for the Democ rats to identify with than the original Owies, not to mention the thugs, druggies, and rapists who have occupied the Occupy squalorvilles.
And the Democ rats did it to themselves. They didn’t just shoot themselves in the foot, but then loudly and publicly demanded (government-subsidized) salt and lemon juice to pour in the wound.
I’m sure it seemed like a good idea at the time. Had the people behind this thing actually thought it all the way through, they might have been able to foresee that the love-in would turn into the Lord of the Flies if you waited long enough. That’s why they needed a plan beyond “let’s try to change the narrative on the economy”. They didn’t have one and (as the article points out) the age of alternative media made covering up the excesses impossible.
I think their plan was that the masses of America would rise up against the government in a popular revolution and run through the streets torching the businesses and houses of those that did not tow the line.
Had the people behind this thing actually thought it all the way through, they might have been able to foresee that the love-in would turn into the Lord of the Flies if you waited long enough.
You could trim the sentence to “Had the people behind this thing actually thought” and ended it there.
