  1. I’ve always felt that when doing some task like assembling furniture or trying to fix something that it’s better to not be doing it under the watchful eye of my wife because I screw up more frequently that way. She now knows to just leave the room when I start something like that. Later I wondered if it was just that I made a bigger (more emotional) deal over the exact same number of screw-ups if observed by female eyes. But this research vindicates my original perception.

  2. Nauts and her colleagues think that the reason may have something to do with men being more strongly attuned to potential mating opportunities.

Andrea reminds us of another hypothesis — women as scolds. I mean, who want to work under those conditions?

  3. So there was no visual. The subjects just had a name (or some other data) indicating the observers’ gender. Well, that certainly begs a question. What would the results have been if pictures of Fabio and Alfred Newman had been used (and Kate Upton and Madeleine Albright).

Also if you didn’t click through to the second page there’s this typical ScientificAmerican bilge:

For example, psychologists Jennifer Richeson and Nicole Shelton found that Caucasian Americans who hold stronger racial prejudices face similar cognitive impairments after interacting with somebody who is African American. In these situations, individuals who hold strong prejudices must try hard to come across as not prejudiced.
