  1. There was a lot of talk about closing down the towers in some small airports and how dangerous it would be. I haven’t seen any reports on the dangers of sea planes landing on small lakes with heavy boating traffic.

I know there are a lot of pilots here so let me explain to you that those fishermen you buzz are not waving hello…

  2. I’ve flown from airports with several hundred planes and no tower. “Communicate, cooperate and aviate” is the operating motto. Just keep your head on a swivel.

As for those float planes, they may not be buzzing the boats but looking for obstacles like floating debris and logs. Float planes are even less forgiving than boats for hitting stuff like that.

Canada is one of the countries that privatized air traffic control. It seems to work well for them. Just because a job must be done, it doesn’t necessarily mean it must be done by government employees. I used to work for a large global services company (>110,000 employees in dozens of countries). My former employer ran prisons (“secure accommodations”), railroads, garbage services, immigration and customs and many other things that are normally done by government employees here in the States. In fact, they had the contract to run over 100 air traffic control towers in the US, the ones most likely to be closed under sequestration.

  3. My favorite manufactured crisis on the news was a story about a tower that had just opened in Frederick MD (built with stimulus funds!) that was going to close due to sequester. No mention of how that airport operated for the years before the shiny new tower. Almost like someone had an agenda…
