Linux On Gateway

OK, so I purchased a new laptop, a Gateway NE522 series. It came with Windows 8 installed. After doing a full Windows update, and making a recovery disk, I tried to install Federa 19 on it from a USB drive (it doesn’t have an optical drive). It wouldn’t boot, instead barfing out the following (after the jump) I’ll probably submit it to the Fedora Project for a bug report, but I’d be interested in opinions:

[Update late evening]

OK, I tried with Ubuntu as well. Same result. Dumped into a shell. I’m guessing that it’s the problem described in comments, but not sure I’ll do that experiment until tomorrow.

  1. You might need to go back into the BIOS and see if you can switch it back over to legacy boot mode. Windows 8 machines use an UEFI boot interface which is supposed to be more secure. Not sure if Fedora supports UEFI or not. You might see it as an option to “disable secure boot mode”. On the Dells I work on you can hit f12 and there is a option to disable secure boot mode in the select boot option menu. I also see something there in the output that suggests that the Windows Boot Configuration Database partition is still there. It’s a little 300 meg partition that stores the Bootmgr database that holds the BCD info needed to load Windows. One Windows 7 it’s labeled BDEDrive.; not sure about Windows 8.

  2. @HeftyJo, Secure Boot must already be off, or he wouldn’t have gotten as far as starting the Linux Kernel. There may still be residual effects, however.

I’m not familiar with systemd and its implementation of udev, but I suspect it’s to blame for the lack of a /dev/root.

Not all that helpful, I guess, unless it lets you Google with a finer toothed comb.

  3. I was installing Linux Mint on a new computer that I built this year. It has a motherboard with the UEFI boot system.

One problem that I ran into is that there is a new type of partition table which linux has a hard time with. Hard drives had to be reformatted to the older MSDOS (MBR) partition table type before I could get Linux Mint to boot correctly. For that matter, I had to do it for my Windows HD as well for the Win7 installer to quit blue-screening on install. Let me see if I can find the reference I used…

    http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/858
    I think this was it.

    Happy debugging. 😛

  4. You might try Debian; I don’t think they’ve gone systemd as of the last release. You might have to dig for firmware files for the wireless card, though, because they’re fairly purist and don’t like the binary-blob most wireless drivers need.

Might be a good diagnostic tool¸ though.

  5. tl;dr added after i typed the stuff below this: the problem seems to be the disk label on your USB drive being longer than 8 characters; try a shorter disk label.)

Rand, at the very bottom of https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=969076 someone says he’s seen this happen because the kernel didn’t see the USB drive. From the emergency shell, see if /dev/sdb exists (that being probably the most likely drive identifier.)

Were you using a flash drive or a USB optical drive? Perhaps if you were using the former, the latter would work. Also the person who said that (comment #11 in my above link) said that he rebooted and it worked the second time; you didn’t say if you tried more than once.

Also see this: https://fedorahosted.org/liveusb-creator/ticket/809 (” liveusb-creator does not change the label of the usb drive, so the Fedora 18 beta cannot boot since it has “hd.stage2=Fedora 18 …” in the boot options. Liveusb-creator had previously changed the disk label to “LIVE” since I tried the fedora 18 live first, then I tried to install the beta. Changing the label to boot (in the boot options) to “LIVE” did the trick.”)

Someone else reporting what sounds like more or less the same thing as my seond link: http://www.jianxu.net/en/2013/01/17/installing-fedora-18-on-windows-8/ (Ignore the page title & look at point 2.)

      1. What’s the volume label on the flash drive? If it’s longer than 8 characters, try changing it to something shorter, like “Fedora” or just “live”.

    1. OK, I had to change both the drive name, and the label in setparams in grub.

Now it’s trying to install, but it can’t find the network, or start X, which isn’t encouraging. Also, it’s asking for an installation source, and the only two options are “Network” and “CD/DVD.”

  6. Hrm. How about this: http://serverfault.com/questions/483396/fail-to-install-fedora-18-from-flash-drive-warning-dev-root-does-not-exist

Having not messed with Linux in many years, I’m not sure exactly how to go about what is suggested here, but it involves modifying a boot instruction line–see the accepted answer, about changing part of the line to inst.stage2=hd:LABEL=LIVE (Where LIVE is actually the shortened name of the usb drive label.) Also, I’m not sure if you need something other than hd in there.

I guess this reported solution is a two-parter: make sure the drive labels under 9 characters, but also modify your boot line to have LABEL= whatever the actual disk label is.

    Here’s a link with a bit more detail: http://web.archive.org/liveweb/https://ask.fedoraproject.org/question/10795/minimal-install-boot-results-in-devroot-does-not-exist/

    1. http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/64340/unable-to-launch-fedora-18-livecd-using-usb-device says this in what hopefully is a little clearer way: “This is common, weird bug – installer images have incorrect labels set for root fs. Use “blkid” after falling into emergency shell to determine installer image LABEL. Reboot. Press “TAB” at Grub boot screen and edit label for root fs.

For Fedora 18 x86_64 netinst image LABEL in grub was set to “Fedora%2018%20x86_64”, changed it to “Fedora%2018%20x”, because root fs label was “Fedora 18 x” 🙂

Note, that you will have this problem with both fedora live usb creator, unetbootin, etc – it’s independent.”

  7. I was having issues with Win 7, so I went to the Ubuntu site, and found an option for installing Ubuntu alongside Win 7. at bootup, you get the option to start either. Ubuntu is a blast, I cannot believe I waited this long to add it…
