  1. So, a Real American ™ would tell civilian airlines to put themselves at risk by ignoring an ADIZ? Or would he order fighter escorts of those airliners?

Japan is telling their airlines to ignore the order because Japan claims that territory and has their own ADIZ covering part of it. We do not, so US airliners would have to report to at least one ADIZ (Japan’s or China’s).

    1. Chris, you clearly have not read the article and your argument is like shouting “squirrel!”

As the article states, the Chinese Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) “exceeds the territorial and personal jurisdiction of the Chinese government, and is not covered by international agreements (as is the case with the rare NOTAMs issued in connection with military exercises or combat situations). American acquiescence to the Chinese declaration is an unprecedented surrender.”

Without assurances from the Chinese government for the safety of our private airliners, the Chinese declaration is a hostile act, tantamount to an unprovoked ”threat or use of force” under the U.N. Charter.

The governments of the world are busy filling the vacuum of Obama’s and Kerry’s efforts to diminish US power.

    2. First, you make the mistake that we should even recognize the Chinese siezure and force our airlines to follow Chinese regulations. Then you side with China over our ally Japan. Typical Obama smart power play.

    3. Japan doesn’t have an ADIZ like China’s. China claimed what was previously international airspace. Japan and South Korea don’t recognize a nations right to unilaterally claim airspace that is international. US apparently does, since even Admiral Gerrib now claims it is China’s air defense space and we should honor it.

      1. Yes Japan has an ADIZ, and it partially overlaps with China’s new zone.

As this expert explains (scroll down past the video) putting US airlines in the middle of a Japan / China fight accomplishes nothing. Sending B-52s down the middle of the ADIZ does, without hazarding civilians.

  2. Luckily, Obama hasn’t advised US carriers to respect the Greater East Asian Co-prosperity Sphere, but only because a previous President staunchly refused to recognize it.

A better response would be “Oh, that claim is utter BS.” Then the Chinese would be faced with the option of commanding a civilian airliner to land in China and impounding it, which is going to cause protests and leave them looking like a dog that caught a bumper. Unfortunately for the passengers, Obama and Kerry wouldn’t bother asking for the return of the passengers and aircraft, and they’d be stuck there until after the 2016 elections.

BTW, someone should tell the Chinese about flightradar24.com, which will tell them everything they need to know regarding civilian aircraft through the area.

  3. When this first came to light, the Obama administration said in the same press conference that they were asking airlines to comply and that they were not asking airlines to comply. Looks like the part about not askingbthem to comply was a lie.

Those lies sure are stacking up.

  4. This is the end game of an impotent presidency. Obama has nothingto fall back on, therefore he’s in no position to deal with “difficult” foreign policy issues. That’s why the bending to Iran and now China.

  5. The foreign ministry of the People’s Republic of China says – “The submission of flight plans to the competent Chinese authorities by airlines of relevant countries including the US shows their constructive attitude and cooperative will in upholding aviation order and security in the airspace above the East China Sea together with China. We appreciate that.”

Another disastrous fumble by John Kerry.
