The Ukelele

A history.

My dad had one, with a Burl Ives book.

When I was growing up, we pronounced it Youkuhlaylee, but as the article points out, Hawai’ian is the most phonetic language in the world (because the written language was invented to be so by the missionaries). So the proper pronunciation is (as the article notes) Ookaylaylay. Also, Honolulu is Hohnohlooloo, not Hahnahlooloo, which is the popular mainland haole pronunciation.

  1. The proper pronunciation of anything is whatever a group agrees it is, regardless of it’s origin. The point of communication is to communicate. The dictionary records use; it doesn’t define it.

Inventing words is a sign of intelligence. The result over time are added to our dictionaries. Without accusation of anything said here, I note that ridicule often demonstrates a lack, but that’s true of much ridicule in general. It’s interesting how much better the left is at ridicule when they are potentially the most affected by it (group think.)

How words are used in different ways and places is fascinating. Ukelele makes me think of Elvis… and loud shirts.
