Obscuring The Target

with chaff:

“You know what we got last week? We got 3,600 pages, half of which were press clippings, including articles about Richard Gere,” he said. “So if that is their idea of complying with a congressional investigation, then we are going to be at this for a long time.”

He also told CNN that Hillary Clinton was wrong when she said that she’d never had a subpoena in her interview with CNN.

“That is demonstrably false,” Gowdy told CNN. “You have an obligation to preserve the public record.”

This is a deliberate attempt to obfuscate. And of course, when someone says they haven’t been cooperative, they’ll say “We’ve turned over thousands of documents, but they’re never satisfied.”

  1. Yes, we get garbage. Then there are those on this website who say that they’ve been given thousands of documents.

  2. Disgust meter broken long ago.

How is it all these lawyers in politics don’t know how to make rule of law work? Charles Manson should have just run for elected office.

  3. There a wonderful confluence of mendaciousness and incompetence at work. But it’s nothing new, of course:
Back in about 1975, the Chief Test Pilot and Director of Aircraft Operations at NASA Ames Flight Research Center, also a recognized expert on aviation safety, requested information from the FAA regarding aircrew training histories among crews involved in various accidents and incidents. After the third written request, he eventually received a huge envelope stuffed with about 300 pages of photocopy, which had apparently been dropped on the floor and then stuffed, unsorted, in the envelope.
What was Lily Tomlin’s line from the old SNL skit? “We’re the Phone Company. We don’t HAVE to care.”

    1. I disagree that what we see here is incompetence.

If anything, it’s well-planned political theater that is written to go over with perfectly timed punchlines on all the late-night TV talk shows when the comedians come out to do their monologues. “Did you hear about those kuh-razy Republican conspiracy theorists? Did you hear what they did today? Hillary gave them THOUSANDS OF PAGES of documents and they say it’s not enough! Wow, who do they think they’re fooling, right guys? CUE THE LAUGH TRACK!”

“Incompetence” implies that they don’t know what they’re doing. They know exactly what they’re doing. It’s all planned, it’s all coordinated, and everybody who matters has already been briefed on what the talking points will be tomorrow morning and what the jokes in the topical section of the monologue will be tomorrow night.
