Ricky Gervais

I don’t watch awards ceremonies, but apparently he handed woke Hollywood its ass last night.

Boo, hoo. Lorraine Ali is all butthurt.

Hollywood proved Gervais’s point.

Related, I think: What happened to Howard Stern? If you want to skip the long history, jump to the end, which relates his recent interview with Hillary.

[Tuesday-morning update]

To hell with these gilded charlatans.

The “liberal” reviews are in for Gervais’s performance, and their tears are delicious.

  1. Definitely worth the 8 minutes. Martin Scorsese deserves some kudos; after taking his shot and appearing on camera his response is only nodding and saying “he’s right, he’s right.”
Couldn’t figure out wtf Keith Urban was doing there until my wife reminded me who he’s married to.

    Lorraine Ali:

The last thing anyone needed was for the smirking master of ceremonies to reprimand them for having hope, or taunt the room for trying to use their influence to change things for the better.

She’s been cast for the lead in the upcoming sequel to Clueless right?

I couldn’t figure out why you were wondering that until I realized I was thinking of Karl Urban.

  2. These folks play pretend, on cue, using someone else’s words for a living. Nothing in that job description says they know more life, the universe, and everything than the rest of us. In fact, it’s obvious they know a great deal less. I guess that’s why the old studio system tried to keep their performers away from the public.

    1. That may have been among the reasons, but I suspect the main one was that a lot of the silent-era stars had heavy foreign or U.S. regional accents, embarrassing vocal tics or just unpleasant voices. That’s why so many had their careers abruptly ended by the advent of talkies.

  3. Gervais has no problem using the mob to attack others. He just doesn’t like it when the mob turns on him.

  4. I watched Gervais. I loved his monologue.

I was amused that some award recipients didn’t think twice but launched right into their scolding diatribes. But then there were a lot of empty Moet bottles in the frame when the camera was on the audience.

  5. I never heard of Ricky Gervais before this, so I had to read the wikipedia article. Mostly TV shows and movies I never saw. This is happening to me more and more as I age, as there’s more media crap filling less and less time.

  6. I first saw Ricky Gervais playing the role of ‘The Boss’ in the British version of ‘The Office’ that used to run on The BBC In America cable channel long before it came to the US. That was long before he was in the movie Night At The Museum II.

Anyway, go see some of his earlier appearances in previous Golden Globe awards on YouTube. Particularly the one from 2016, where Harvey Weinstein can been seen multiple times laughing it up in the audience among the glitterati.
