I’m glad to see others noting this simple fact. There is a lot of absurdity in calling the incident a crossfire, but the simple truth is that Iran, knowing it was going to launch an attack, telling others it was going to launch an attack, then should have closed its airspace to prevent something like this from happening.
The aircrew I think was heroic. After being hit, they continued to fly the plane, circled around to start heading back to the airport, and when they finally lost airspeed and altitude; they put it down in what looks like a small sports complex. They travelled over 10 more miles after being hit.
