I think that the book had been done before, but the new version sounds pretty good. It’s supposed to be a rainy day tomorrow (something that has been far too rare in what is supposed to be the wettest month in southern California), so maybe we’ll go see it. The scenery from the trailers looks like it would be spectacular on a big screen.

I read, on imdb, that there is no real dog…the dog is totally CGI
Yes, it notes that at the end of the review. No actual dogs were harmed in the production of this film.
The part where he’s leading a sled and gets distracted by the lone wolf sitting on a bluff brought to mind the recent video of Rykker.
I saw the “version” (if you can call it that) starring Clark Gable, and enjoyed it, even if it had little to nothing to do with the Jack London novel, which as I recall had kind of a downer conclusion.
Is the new one in any way better than the others (there have been at least 8 renditions that I know of)? The book’s ending is, the main human characters are killed by native Americans, and Buck becomes the Ghost Dog, revisiting the site of his last master’s murder every year, and leading a pack of wolves to slaughter the Indians until they vacate the valley forever. In some versions, the Indians are replaced by “white criminals,” in others it’s simply left out.
It’s likely to have better cinematography, and it will definitely beat out all the others in terms of CGI dogs.
