Chrome

Google just gave you the best reason yet to quit using it.

I primarily use Brave, which is built on the Chrome code base, but designed both for privacy and ad avoidance, with an option to provide micropayments to sites you like. I also like it because it was founded by Brendan Eich, after he was fired by Mozilla for giving money to a group opposed to gay marriage.

  1. Ultimately, that change in the way Google is looking at Chrome–that it isn’t a tool that serves its users, but is a tool that serves up users to advertisers, albeit in a slightly more privacy protective way–is a bad sign. It’s also the best reason to finally ditch it altogether.

I don’t see that as a change at all. Google looks at all their tools and utilities that way. Have since day one. Whether or not you view that as evil, is, as one famous fictional character once said: “It depends upon your point of view.”.

I switched to Brave on my Ubuntu/Linux Virtual Box Guest O/S simply because Mozilla kept crashing it. But I have to save it works really well there and no crashes since I switched. I use Opera on my phone.

  2. Besides the privacy issue, it is a bad idea because it fences you into a tiny part of the web by only presenting what you are already interested it. I’d prefer to explore new ideas.

I already find this to be a problem on YouTube as it tightly presents videos only related to what I have already seen. So I never get exposed to a broader set of topics or videos.

    1. Vivaldi is nice, lots of features that I don’t use though. Brave is a little the same way. Brave mobile kinda sucks

In a recent interview with Lex Fridman, Eich said he thinks of the browser as the ultimate app. Why use all these other apps when you can just use the browser?

  3. The article is actually kind of dumb. This new Topics thing is less bad than FLoC was. This article should’ve been written a year ago, about that.

  4. I gave up on Firefox a while ago because it was turning my Win 10 PC to sludge. Installed Brave and haven’t looked back. Also like that it was done by the guy who Mozilla fired for PC reasons.
