  1. Today Bill Nelson was asked why China was exploring the far side of the moon and he literally said “They are going to have a lander on the far side of the moon, which is the side which is always in dark. Uh, we’re not planning to go there”

What an idiot. He is no smarter about the moon than Sheila Jackson Lee.

    1. At least she did warn us what can happen when you accidentally slice the surface, I mean when you cut the cheese.

  2. The moon makes a great shield against electromagnetic interference projections from Earth space. Concern for which should be early warning for Earth-side installations & activities.

Won’t save them from lunar orbital satellite constellations/fleets.

Politics is about money. Cost/Benefit sorts of stuff.

With so much wealth to be had, everyone is going to spend astronomical amounts for protection, irritation, chest-beating, and profit.

  3. One of the great Arthur C. Clarke’s observations about the Moon was that the far side is the only place in the entire solar system that’s permanently shielded from Earth’s “radio din,” making it the ideal place to set up radio telescopes of great sensitivity. I hope there is something like the ITU in the works to keep China – and everyone else – from screwing up this opportunity.

    1. Well it looks like selenostationary orbits aren’t a thing. So you wouldn’t have to worry about noise coming down from a lunar orbit above the “dark side”, unless it’s a Starlink type of deal. However there is still the potential of relay from L2 to L4/L5 to Earth from the dark side. Along with the surface chatter, should there be bases established there.

  4. In a space un-related story about China and our favorite institution over there, the Wuhan Institute for Virology, there is this news story out of Canada concerning the Proximal Origins of Ebola virus in China. A story Justin Castro’s government tried to suppress.
