I like the spell chequer in Firefox, but I’ve noticed that it doesn’t understand American spelling. On the previous post, it told me that “defense” was spelled incorrectly, and suggested “defence” instead. I’ve also seen it tell me that “favorite” is properly spelled “favourite.” Anyone know why?
Amusingly, I also note that it doesn’t think that “firefox” is a word.
Check the “About” box and/or the packaging information for your distribution, and see if you accidentally downloaded the GB or CA version?
Mine shows ‘en-US’ in the agent string, and it doesn’t like colour or defence.
The dictionaries are a separate download. You can check which you have installed in the “Tools>Add-ons” menu. You want “United States English Dictionary”.
Then press the right mouse button in any text entry box in a webpage, like this comment reply message box I’m typing into now, and see if you have the “Languages>English/United States” dictionary selected.
Well, that explains it. Somehow, it was using English-HK. I changed to US.
This may be due to one of the key annoyances of form-filling on the web with a scroll wheel mouse.
The form asks you to choose from a list, so you select the, (say), language of your choice then, without clicking in the form again, scroll wheel down to the next question, only to find that the helpful listbox has changed your selection to Swahili.
It can be… interesting checking an application form after you’ve completed it to find what you have selected for gender, sexual orientaion, age range, religion etc.
