   1. Yes, we should all follow their example and recognize that comfort and sufficient food is a decadent concept.

6. I’d love to turn on all my lights tonight; the problem is they’re mostly of the incandescent variety, and I don’t want to use up my supply any quicker than necessary.

      you just made me realize that ALL my bulbs are pig tails! Even with the g’sons here. I’m not abusing my fair share.

      1. Drat. Too late to do anything special. I looked at Amazon and didn’t see any arc lights, but I did find a site that told how to build one.

         Unfortunately this uses batteries instead of house current, but I suppose you could throw the batteries in the garbage instead of recycling them.

7. I personally feel that disregard is a better approach than contrariness or even contempt. Not that I’m going to chastise anyone for being contrary, but I think it’s much more injurious to the Earth Hour conceit if people simply ignore them, as opposed to trying to engage them on their terms.

   When you try to save the world and you stir up a lot of controversy and people are pushing back, you can still convince yourself that you’re fighting the good fight. You’re a martyr. When you try to save the world and nobody listens and nothing happens and you’re totally ignored, you go home and cry yourself to sleep before giving up.

   1. I completely forgot about Earth Hour until I was reminded by a blog I was reading last night.

      A couple of years ago I did the “turn on all the lights” thing, but last year I just ignored it and went about my business as usual.

      So the only thing I did differently this year was forgetting about it instead of ignoring it.

8. If only the two satellite dishes on my roof were actually plugged into something. (I have Verizon FIOS – previous owners went some other routes.)

9. Drove around in my V8 climate adjustor and will be lighting a few 500W halogen bulbs. We could use a little Gorbal Worming around here.

10. I don’t know if this was mentioned already. I just found out that Jeff Bezos of BlueOrigin and Amazon has just recovered a set of F-1 Apollo engines from the ocean.

    1. Yeah, I saw that, but they’re pretty banged up. By the time you could get them back into spec it woud probably have been cheaper to just build new ones. ^_^

       So did airports turn off their approach and landing lights for Earth Hour? Enquiring minds want to know.

11. I lived without electricity for over a week, after hurricane Sandy. I refuse to voluntarily live in the dark ages for even five minutes, much less an hour.
