Judith Curry

…tells her colleagues to stop circling the climate wagons around Michael Mann.

If she does want to counter sue, I suspect she’d have no problem raising funds.

[Update a few minutes later]

This seems to be the nut graf:

For the past decade, scientists have come to the defense of Michael Mann, somehow thinking that defending Michael Mann is fighting against the ‘war on science’ and is standing up for academic freedom. Its time to let Michael Mann sink or swim on his own. Michael Mann is having all these problems because he chooses to try to muzzle people that are critical of Mann’s science, critical of Mann’s professional and personal behavior, and critical of Mann’s behavior as revealed in the climategate emails. All this has nothing to do with defending climate science or academic freedom.

Yup.

[Update early afternoon]

Ken White at Popehat says that Mark has a fool for a client.

I have no comment, obviously.

      1. Millions of years in jail would be good, but I’ll be happy to see him pay Steyn’s and Rand’s legal bills.

      2. Dr. Mann wins his suit, and after the pattern of Leon Uris’ “Queen’s Bench VII” is awarded a judgement in line with the value of his reputation? (“A half penny . . . the smallest coin in the Realm!”)

  1. A part that caught my eye this morning was this:

With regards to climate science, IMO the key issue regarding academic freedom is this: no scientist should have to fall on their sword to follow the science where they see it leading or to challenge the consensus. I’ve fallen on my dagger (not the full sword), in that my challenge to the consensus has precluded any further professional recognition and a career as a university administrator. That said, I have tenure, and am senior enough to be able retire if things genuinely were to get awful for me. I am very very worried about younger scientists, and I hear from a number of them that have these concerns.

In real science, challenging the consensus with shockingly innovative research or deeper insights into the question at hand, or providing a more comprehensive grasp of the breadth of the problem, advances a career. Such people often get labeled as iconoclasts or geniuses, Unfortunately, due to the hijacking by “the team” and the unfortunate confluence of money, political power, and emotional advocacy groups, climate science doesn’t act like real science anymore, it acts more like the old Catholic Church. Judith Curry has questioned the hierarchy’s holy writ, and as a consequence she knows she’ll be shunted aside to some sleepy bishopric where she can’t cause them further trouble, despite being at the top of her field. Instead of seeking the truth, their highest commandment is “thou shalt not threaten our revenues and holy unearned prestige.” I mean, these folks can’t even get a medium-term weather forecast remotely right, perhaps because they keep trying to replace barometers and thermometers with CO2 meters. They can’t get long term trends right, either, which is why young folks are driving on the streets of a planet that is cooler than the day they were conceived, despite a “consensus” that by now their rubber tires would all but melt on the scorching pavement.
