  1. Yes, it would be nice. But I think best strategy for Iran right now is to feign weakness. Leaking stories like this deliberately could help dampen enthusiasm for sanctions or other punitive actions. And it doesn’t help that this story came from a news source with no prior history. Maybe they’re for real and maybe they’re just one-time disinformation.

  2. The Iranians probably threatened to move their bank accounts to Singapore if the Swiss didn’t play ball.

Karl, “feigning weakness” is not a good tactic for a regime who rules over its people despite their preferences to the contrary. “feigning weakness” will only invite more revolt from within. It will also cause Hamas, Hezbollah, et. al. to back down in their confrontations with Israel, Lebanon, the USA, Saudi Arabia, etc. if they think Iran doesn’t have their back.

  3. Stuxnet is awesome.

One of the great things about stuxnet, is that it sends data back to whomever made it so the makers know everything about the systems that were infected.

The targeted assassination of Iranian nuclear scientists in Iran with the same EFP’s used against our soldiers in Iraq sends the right message.

The bad thing about stuxnet is that it sets a precedence. Our infrastructure is extremely vulnerable to a stuxnet style of attack. No secret that our institutions like the DoD are constantly being attacked. Wired reported that Oak Ridge National Laboratory recently suffered a successful attack.

  4. If Iran is “feigning weakness” it’s for an international audience but as Brock points out other people closer to home are watching.

I think Karl’s basing his thought on how Saddam Hussein got ousted because he’s now widely believed to have pretended to have more in the WMD category than he actually had, in a bluff aimed at both the domestic and international audiences.

Thing is, officially Iran insists they’ve got Stuxnet on the ropes. Given their past bluster about supersonic submarines and stealth flying boats, I just don’t think they’re subtle enough to do what Karl’s suggesting.
