California Here I Come

OK, so after getting a speeding ticket a few blocks from the Frank Borman auto dealer last night, I’m driving my U-Haul special F-150 back down to El Paso (I may check with the local ATF office before I leave and see if they’d like me to deliver a few dozen government-funded machine guns to Juarez on the way, for a little extra income — I’ve got plenty of room in the bed, and I hear that they’re running low. Maybe some grenades, too. Maybe even MANPADS, if they’re on special this week).

Anyway, then on to LA this evening.

  1. Pardon the irrelevant comment, but Hit & Run just posted a bit on Moon Express. Some amateur discussions in the comments on the merits of things other than HLV.

  2. Get an Avalon. I was stopped for speeding several times over the years I had one and not one ticket. I’m not particularly charming or charismatic so I figure it must have been the car.

I remember reading that the Avalon was one of the perks Saddam Hussein gave his administrative people.

  3. Yea it’s ridiculous with the speeding tickets out towards the West Texas border. I got a ticket driving to Santa Fe, while I was going through the Panhandle one time. A few hours later I was legally driving the same speed I just got pulled over for back in Texas. Going over some imaginary line in the land I guess makes your car inherently safer to operate in New Mexico. But if you come back into Texas your car could potentially blow up if you try to drive 85.

    1. I’ve never been stopped for speeding in that area, but twice I was stopped by Border Patrol agents wanting to know if I was an American citizen. (In both cases, I was at least 50 miles from the international border — so much for Federalism.)

The funny thing is, the brownshirts never asked to “see your papers.” They just took my word for it and let me go.

That raises an interesting question. Would I have been treated differently if I looked or sounded Hispanic? If so, I don’t see how anyone can claim that’s not racial discrimination. If not, then what is the point of the whole exercise? Do they expect illegal immigrants to self-identify?

I’ve been asked to tick a box stating I’m not from Libya, Syria etc and that I’m not a terrorist when I downloaded some software…

        1. The difference is that dialog box is there to save the company money, by complying with some government mandate without actually doing anything. The Border Patrol isn’t there to save the taxpayers money.

The Border Patrol has a $12 billion budget. Each agent costs the taxpayers a quarter of a million dollars a year, so the four guys I saw represent a one-million-dollar operation.

  4. So where did Rand go? Maybe the comment about MANPADs got him a free holiday in the local klink. Or he’s enjoying a quiet weekend with Mrs. Simberg.
