  1. Some of us pessimists don’t let our pessimism stop us from actually doing stuff. We just analyze things more and plan more to compensate. I usually have a plan A, B, and C for every major work I have to do.

I wish whoever was in charge of X-33 was a pessimist which went with Al-Li tanks instead of trying to do those wonderful lobed LH2 tanks.

    1. But is that really pessimism, or just optimism that with enough foresight you’ll be able triumph over Murphy?

  2. I’m getting ready to ferry my airplane from Colorado to Alabama (where I now live). When it comes to flight planning and especially weather, I tend to be a pessimist. I’m planning multiple routes for the flight so I can select the best one based on the weather that day. I look at alternatives should the weather be worse than forecast, which happens quite often. While I have an instrument rating, I’m not current and it doesn’t take much to exceed the capabilities of me or my plane. Excessive optimism is a good way to kill yourself.

I once heard a sentiment attributed to Ben Franklin but have not been able to confirm if he ever said it. It went something like this:

“Some people are optimists. They go through life expecting the best and are often disappointed. I, on the other hand, am a pessimist. When something bad happens, I’m prepared. When it doesn’t happen, I’m pleasantly surprised.”

    Murphy was an optimist.
