  1. Has SpaceX spent as much money to develop the whole Starship-Super Heavy vehicle as NASA has spent on the crawler? Yet another case where the design decisions made back at the beginning of the Shuttle program is still driving astronomical (Ha!) costs.

It’s the weight of the SRB’s that make the whole Vehicle Assembly Building and the crawlers necessary. Being able to fuel on the pad means you can use fairly standard cranes and transporters that you can just buy off the shelf, albeit, a very large self.

The whole SpaceX launch and recovery system is extremely ingenious. When was the last time anybody said that about NASA?

Ingenuous quite a bit. Ingenious not so much.

  2. This is the first time they’re using the chopsticks to mount the vehicle on the pad, instead of a crane, whcih should give us an inkling of what flight operations will be like down the road. It’ll take at least one expendable launch to get a landing license for the booster, probably several before Starship itself tries. There’s a big sonic boom question to be answered, and it can’t be breaking windows in Browsville and Matamoros.

  3. Elon Musk wants SpaceX’s biggest rocket ready to launch in July, but experts say he may not get his wish

It seems to me, the FAA delay caused SpaceX to shift to JSC, before Musk wanted to, and has changed his plans. Not just with Texas but also in regard to Ocean Platforms. Or Musk knew he could problems with Texas, and ocean platforms and JSC were pathways depending on what FAA did. Or what FAA did resulted in Musk focusing JSC [leaving oil platforms as plan C].
So, doing plan B. And main plan is launching a lot of Starships, which Plan A and/or Plan B can’t really do, but he pushing JSC, to get to point of making a fairly high Starship launch rate. Or enough to do NASA contract, but Musk wants to launch a lot Starlink satellites, which probably can’t be done from JSC, but maybe it can.

Anyhow I think there should be a starship test launch before the orbital starship test launch. Which would delay the orbital starship test launch. But what important is launch rate he get from JSC and has find way to increase it further.
