While I agree that these abuses must be stopped, why the heck is anyone surprised by this? J Edgar Hoover abused the Constitution daily, this behavior has been baked into their behavior from the very beginning. Any org that decides to leverage knowledge of Denny Hastert’s behavior to control him politically rather than seek justice for his victims is pure evil.
The bureau needs to be burned to the ground and their powers returned to local and state law enforcement. Maybe a national crime lab would be useful.

Yes. And largely forgotten by history; he kept (blackmail) files on a host of powerful people like the Kennedy’s. Was opposed to for instance the creation of the CIA; wanted the FBI to have supreme power to investigate foreign as well as domestic. The FBI under him was a corrupt organization; recall Hoover testifying in front of Congress back in the ’50’s that there was no such thing as organized crime. The rumor is that they (the mob) had some kind of personal dirt on Hoover that they used to keep him in check.
