My brother is pretty good at analyzing stuff like this, and once attended a panel discussion of the “Hands off of Mars, rocks got rights” viewpoint at a science fiction convention. He asked one of the panelists whether they could stipulate that in order to have rights, an object has to have desires. I think that’s a very elegant way of clarifying the difficulty for people who for whatever reason don’t get it.
I forget how the panelist responded, but I think it was something like, “you’ve got a good point, but then there would be nothing for this panel to discuss.” In any case, it made my brother decide to go check out what else was going on.

I wonder how much of this is just attention-seeking? There’re people who will say or do almost anything, if it means they get in the papers or draws attention to some cause. The Chicago group is probably doing the latter. Come on, we’ve seen this sort of fake sincerity troll since virtually the dawn of the internet. If they’re still protesting this twenty years from now, then we’ll know for what that’s worth that they really meant it.

Kind of gives new meaning to the term “moonbat” doesn’t it?
From the urban dictionary: “Moonbat”
Any number of irrational and hysterical individuals whose self-indulgent intellectual indolence has led them to a visceral hatred of all things western. Moonbats tend to frequent anti-globalization and numerous other forms of rallies, demonstrations, sit-ins, and the like, tend to look dirty, and can frequently be heard using terms such as, “imperialism”. The mark of a true moonbat is the total lack of perspective (i.e. “if a dictator provides free healthcare, I like that dictator” – actual moonbat quote).

Unfortunately one of the consequences of social media is that it allows nuts like the Moon kooks to get more attention then they should. Really nature has been “bombing” the Moon for billions of years. Its a natural process.

Oh drat. My former satire was targeted at the wrong celestial body. I forecast the Disney movie about “Parimeesee Sue” the single-celled animal on mars being victimized by the evil Terrans. Obviously I should have gone for “Boulder Bill” on the moon. I’ll have to find that comment and rewrite it for moons and rocks instead of Mars and single-celled microorganisms.
